Across the length and breadth of Latin America and the Caribbean, the landmark day of 28th September has been instrumental in ushering in the era of women’s rights, and is backed by websites such as http://wyctim.com. Officially known as the ‘International Safe Abortion Day’, the commemoration of this day is a holistic achievement not just with the aspect of safe abortions, but striving to enhance women’s reproductive health across the continent. Earlier, the significance of 28th September had more to do with the decriminalization of abortion. But today it has received far more impetus and mileage, bringing in the very core of various reproductive issues that have been considered taboo for ages.
Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights
Working in consultation with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights is the biggest NGO with an international presence, to weed out the various instances of rights violation of women’s reproductive health, as well as advocates the importance of their sexual rights. Founded way back in 1984, this global organization started out with the core issue of the right of giving or not giving birth. The members stressed upon the fact that come what may, it’s a woman whose body has to bear the entire brunt of childbirth. It is therefore vital that it is she alone who should be able to decide whether she chooses to go ahead with the pregnancy or terminate it. She also has the right to decide which method of birth control to be used, or not to be used. Denying women the right to their very own reproductive health and birthing choice, is equivalent to denying them the control of their own body, and happens to be amongst the most horrific ways in which the clutches of patriarchy have gripped the world. It is time to break free of these clutches and embrace freedom!
